SAN ANTONIO — The Alamo City is gearing up for a weekend of cultural celebration, live entertainment and community reflection, anchored by the nation’s largest march honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Whether you are looking for laughs at the Majestic Theatre or planning to join thousands on the historic East Side, here is what is happening in San Antonio this weekend

Unity and Reflection: MLK March

While the official holiday is Monday, the city’s commemorative spirit begins this weekend. San Antonio continues its tradition of hosting the largest Martin Luther King Jr. march in the United States.

When: Monday, Jan. 19. Lineup begins at 7:30 a.m.; the march kicks off at 10 a.m.

Where: Starts at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy (3501 MLK Drive) and ends at Pittman-Sullivan Park.

Highlights: This year’s theme is “Diversity Unites Us. Love Leads Us. Action Propels Us.” The post-march celebration at Pittman-Sullivan Park will feature a keynote address by Olympic gold medalist Gabby Douglas and a performance by Grammy winner Coco Jones.

Pro Tip: VIA Metropolitan Transit is providing fare-free bus service for march participants from various Park and Ride locations.

Center Stage: Comedy and Arts

The downtown arts scene is buzzing with high-profile performances and local theater.

Ali Wong at the Majestic: Comedian and actress Ali Wong brings her signature wit to the Majestic Theatre on Sunday, Jan. 18. Tickets are in high demand for the 7 p.m. show.

Tony Pepperoni & Friends: For those looking for local flavor, the Woodlawn Theatre hosts Tony Pepperoni of Kill Tony fame on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 8 & 10 p.m., promising an evening of explicit, high-energy stand-up.

Conjuring Creativity: On Friday night, the Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex celebrates its one-year anniversary with a variety show featuring live music, drag and burlesque performances starting at 6 p.m.

Nightlife and Live Music

From honky-tonk to Tejano, the city’s venues have a diverse lineup for Friday and Saturday nights.

Fans of ’90s alternative rock band Everclear can head to the historic Aztec Theatre Friday at 8 p.m. The band, led by founder Art Alexakis, is expected to perform era-defining hits such as “Santa Monica,” “Father of Mine,” and “I Will Buy You a New Life.” The concert features support from opening act The Daisy Killers.

The Lonesome Rose: Rockabilly fans can catch Lonesome Dave Fisher on Friday night at 9 p.m. for a session of dancing and honky-tonk.

Mustang Sally’s: For a classic San Antonio experience, Stampede & Eddie G will perform old-school Tejano music on Friday evening at 6 p.m.

Dinner Jazz: If you prefer a quieter evening, Albi’s Vite Italian Kitchen is hosting “Solo Sax Sessions” with Noah Peterson on Friday at 6 p.m.

Ray Wylie Hubbard: The Texas music icon performs at John T. Floore’s Country Store on Saturday night. Doors open at 7 p.m.

James McMurtry: For those who prefer an intimate setting, the acclaimed songwriter will be at Sam’s Burger Joint on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Conscious Fest 6: Hip-hop fans can head to 502 Bar on Saturday night for this showcase featuring Pawz One, Lyrikill, and several other underground artists.

Family and Festivals

If you are looking for outdoor activities or educational fun, Saturday offers several unique options across the city.

Taste of Memphis Blues & Jazz Festival: Rolling Oaks Mall transforms into a musical hub on Saturday, Jan. 17. Starting at noon, the festival celebrates the genres of blues and jazz with live performances and local food vendors.

Roars & Snores at the San Antonio Zoo: For a more adventurous Saturday night, the San Antonio Zoo is hosting an overnight experience. Participants can enjoy a guided flashlight tour of the zoo after dark, animal presentations, and breakfast the following morning.

Sprout’N About SA Market: Rainbow Gardens (Thousand Oaks location) is hosting its certified farmers market on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., featuring local artisans, growers, and ranchers.

Art and Culture

San Antonio’s museums have debuted several new exhibits this month that are worth a visit while the weather is mild.

The Witte Museum: Two major exhibitions are currently open: “Unseen Oceans,” which explores deep-sea discovery, and “The Steves Family: Building San Antonio,” a look at the architectural and civic history of the city.

McNay Art Museum: The museum recently opened “Ferias, Parques y Plazas: A Celebration of Public Space,” an exhibition featuring works by Diego Rivera and Adriana M. Garcia that explore the vibrancy of community gathering spots.

Wellness at the Tobin: On Saturday morning at 10 a.m., the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts hosts “Rhythm & Moves,” a free community dance cardio session.
