This week, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors approved ordinances that would allow the city to create two more so-called entertainment zones, including one in the upper Fillmore.
At the Finerie, Jan Derrick likes the idea and the new opportunities that would come with it.
“I think it will bring more activity to the neighborhood, it will also give the businesses a chance to extend their businesses until like the evening hours and have events that run into the nighttime bring more people in, more foot traffic … I think it’s a great development,” Derrick said.
The board of supervisors approved two ordinances on Tuesday that would allow the city to create additional entertainment zones, including in the upper Fillmore.
“What I’ve learned is that the mayor has to sign it and then after that there is a 30 day process and then we work to come with a strategic plan on how we apply for street closures as well as non-closures, where merchants and bars would be able to benefit during a small event,” said Patti Mangan, with the Fillmore Merchants Association.
The city created its first entertainment zone two years ago, on Front Street in the Financial District. The title allows sales and public outdoor consumption of alcohol from bars and restaurants during special events.
Supervisor Stephen Sherill said the latest entertainment zone request comes ahead of the Fillmore Jazz Festival.
He says, via statement, that the Fillmore Merchants Association reached out adding:
“Our small businesses are the still bouncing back from the pandemic and this legislation gives them the ability to more easily host night markets, block parties and outdoor World Cup viewing parties.”
“So, we have the Fillmore Jazz Festival coming up on July 4 and 5 which we’re working very hard on and this will be the first big application of the entertainment zone and how it benefits our merchants,” Mangan said.
A similar entertainment zone already exists in the lower part of Fillmore Street.
“I think more broadly this speaks to an effort by so many of us across the city to ensure that the same investments that are happening in downtown, around entertainment and activation and small businesses, are happening in other parts of the city as well,” said Supervisor Bilal Mahmood.
