The former Duchess of York’s 2011 interview with Australian presenter Michael Usher became infamous after she walked out multiple times before running after the crew in her stockings on the lawn
Sarah Ferguson is said to be living abroad in exile while weighing up her options — having become more deeply entangled in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.
Last September, several charities severed ties with the former Duchess of York following revelations that she had emailed the convicted paedophile just weeks after pledging to cut all contact with him. In recent days, however, additional concerning emails have come to light.
Released by the US Department of Justice, the correspondence showed that Sarah, who left Royal Lodge following King Charles’ request, asked the disgraced financier to “marry” her, offered to arrange tours of Buckingham Palace for his clients, and even brought her daughters, Beatrice and Eugenie, to meet Epstein.
Meanwhile, one person who has dealt with Sarah privately away from the cameras is experienced Australian television presenter Michael Usher. He conducted a disastrous interview with Sarah in 2011, the same year she sent the email to Epstein, for 60 Minutes Australia.
The exchange became so tense that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s former wife walked out.
Last year, Michael appeared on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy and Wippa with Kate Ritchie, where he spoke about his uncomfortable encounters with the ex-Duchess.
Providing some context, he revealed: “I had to call her Duchess. She wouldn’t let me call her Sarah, lots and lots of airs and graces.
“But she was fine, and she was relatively sweet. But then there was just this moment…she turned and getting her back into the chair, was crazy. She came back and she continued the interview, and then it was like a different personality again.”
During the tense exchange about her memoir Finding Sarah: A Duchess’s Journey to Find Herself, Sarah challenged him: “Don’t try and trick me now because I am not going to play this game. Delete that bit.”
The atmosphere became charged when Michael requested Sarah view undercover recordings where she appeared to offer access to her former partner Andrew in exchange for substantial payments.
Once the interview finally concluded, Michael and his production team stepped outside, only to have Sarah reportedly chase after him.
Describing the strange incident, Michael, who characterised the exchange as a “hot mess”, recalled: “We walked outside, and the Duchess came running up behind me. She chucked her heels off and she’s in her stockings on the lawn. Going ‘Michael, how was that?’
“By that stage, I just said, ‘Sarah, if I were you, I’d be asking to go back into the room and do that interview all over again, because I don’t know what happened.’
“Then she goes, ‘Oh, well, anyway, who wants to sign some books? I’ll sign your book for you. And now, what are your kids names?’ And off she went from there.”
Michael previously described the interview as a “train wreck” and remarked: “She walked out on me three or four times. It was absolutely horrendous.”
