The mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie is missing in Arizona, and law enforcement made concerning statements about her well-being.
Authorities said Monday they were treating the 84-year-old’s disappearance as a crime.
“I hope we find her safe and sound, but we can’t ignore what’s in front of us,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said of Nancy Guthrie after authorities encountered aspects of “grave concern” in a search of her home near Tucson.
Nanos, citing her family, said Guthrie has “physical ailments” that limit her mobility but is cognitively sound.
She has been missing since Saturday and was last seen at her residence that night, according to a missing persons flyer.
Nanos said she may have been exposed to cold weather overnight. Airplanes, drones, and helicopters are being used in the search.
A law enforcement visit to Nancy Guthrie’s home appeared to elevate the urgency.
“We get these calls quite often, and we do a good job of searching the area,” Nanos said. “But this one stood out because of what was described to us at the scene and what we found just in looking at the scene.” He declined to elaborate.
The woman’s disappearance was the top news on the “Today” show Monday. Host Craig Melvin told viewers it is a “deeply personal story for us.”
“Our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” an absent Savannah Guthrie said in a statement read on the NBC morning program.
A spokesperson for “Today” told celebrity.land earlier on Monday that the Guthrie family is “working closely” with authorities and urged anyone with information to reach out to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
“The family is grateful for the outreach, thoughts and prayers,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.
