Modernist Soviet Circuses: propaganda, performance and populist entertainment

It was an icy Monday when Saweetie tap, tap, tapped into the KTLA 5 Morning News to link up with entertainment anchor Melvin Robert.

The rapper joined him in the studio after she caught wind of his tutorial on her song “Boffum,” to Frank Buckley, Jessica Holmes and Mark Kriski. She then decided she wanted to explain it to the KTLA 5 audience herself.

“So ‘Boffum’ is basically a condensed version of both of them, you know? So do you want the creamer or the milk? Boffum,” she said.

“Most times you don’t want to make a choice, you want it all!” Eric Spillman chimed in.

“Absolutely,” Saweetie agreed, whose real name is Diamonté Quiava Valentin Harper. “That’s why you get paid the big bucks.”

The single is from the artist’s latest album, “Hella Pressure.” The term “hella” pays homage to the slang of the San Francisco Bay Area, where she’s originally from.

“I’ve been on this journey for quite some time, and you know, when you’re on the journey of where you see yourself going, sometimes you face constructive criticism, scrutiny. But I feel like I’m under pressure, I’ve been shining like a diamond, and my real name is Diamante. So it’s very aligned with with my life,” she said of the five-track project. “I just felt like, between the pressure that I felt publicly and the pressure that I applied on myself, these are the culmination of those songs that I worked really hard on. So it’s just like, not only am I under pressure, I’m applying pressure.”

On the project, the USC alum works with the K-pop group Twice for the song “Superstars.”

Over the years, she’s collaborated with plenty of big names. Her dream collaboration is with a major legend, Cher.

“We shot a MAC Cosmetics campaign together, and I was on this vintage Instagram the other day, and I saw her perform, and her performances used to be so crazy,” she told Robert. “She’s been such a great, like a big sister, a mentor. (She) checks up on me sometimes. So I think it’d be great to collaborate with the icon like that.”

She revealed the best piece of advice the “Turn Back Time” singer gave her was: “Just do you.”

Saweetie’s “Hella Pressure” is out now and is available wherever you get your music.

She’ll be heading back to the Bay Area for the City Connect Concert, presented by Levi’s, after the San Francisco Giants take on the Tampa Bay Rays at Oracle Park on Aug. 16. For information, head here.
