SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — This weekend is also full of light, cameras, glitz and glamour across Savannah. SCAD is once again rolling out the red carpet for the 28th annual SCAD Savannah Film Festival – the largest university-run film festival in the country.

Last year, the festival drew more than 60,000 visitors and pumped millions into Savannah’s local economy – and this year, organizers anticipate it’s going to be even bigger for the next eight days, the city will transform into a movie lover’s paradise for the sold-out festival.

This year’s event features 167 films from around the world, including award contenders and world premieres. It starts Saturday with “Eternity” starring Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen and closes November 1st with Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.” You may recognize Hollywood names attending, such as Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney will be honored for their contributions to film and television.

City leaders say the event is a major boost for Savannah’s creative economy – while spotlighting local diversity and talent on a global stage.

“For me, it’s an awesome occasion to highlight SCAD and the Film Festival. This is why we put so much emphasis on Savannah in its entirety. Savannah is a very, very multicultural city and it has opportunity for movies, opportunity for music, and we have a very, very good backdrop,” said Detric Leggett, the Alderman for District 2.

SCAD president Paula Wallace calls the festival a “living classroom,” offering students face-to-face access with top filmmakers and producers.

Last year, the festival screened more than 150 films. SCAD says the event continues to play a major role in boosting the city’s growing film and arts economy.
