Scarlett Johansson’s first date with her now-husband Colin Jost didn’t go as expected.
“Nobody had ever asked me out before,” Johansson, 41, recalled of her early relationship with Jost, 43, during her Monday, December 1, appearance on Today With Jenna & Friends. “I was a serial monogamist, and I never got the sort of traditional, like, ‘Hey, would you like to have dinner sometime?’ … He actually asked me out on a date.”
The Black Widow star said she and the Saturday Night Live comedian “went to an Italian restaurant in the East Village,” where they had a “lovely dinner at, like, 8 p.m.” However, Johansson wasn’t sure what to do with herself when Jost asked her to continue the date at a bar.
“Afterward, he was like, ‘I’m meeting friends, let’s go grab a drink,’ and I hadn’t dated basically ever, so I was just like, ‘I have to go now.’ I need to leave,’” she explained.
The date ended up only being about 90 minutes long, which confused Johansson’s babysitter for her now 11-year-old daughter, Rose, whom she shares with ex Romain Dauriac. (Johansson later welcomed son Cosmo, now 4, with Jost.)
“I got home to relieve my babysitter and she was like, ‘Why are you home?’ and I was like, ‘I don’t know!’ I just felt so flustered,” she continued.
Jost was also confused by Johansson’s abrupt departure from the date.
“Later, he was like, ‘I totally thought that was it. You were acting so weird.’ I panicked. I don’t know,” she concluded.
Jost and Johansson first sparked dating rumors in May 2017 when they were spotted making out at a New York City bar. Two years later, Johansson’s publicist confirmed to the Associated Press that the couple got engaged. The Jurassic World Rebirth actress later shared details about Jost’s proposal.
“He did, like, a whole James Bond situation,” she said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “He’s got a lot behind that news desk. He’s very charming and very thoughtful and romantic. I was surprised. Even if you kind of imagine what that moment is going to be, like, it’s still a beautiful moment.”
A source exclusively told Us Weekly the following month that Jost had become “a great father figure to Rose,” adding that Johansson’s daughter “is obsessed with” Jost.
In October 2020, Meals on Wheels confirmed via Instagram that Jost and Johannson had secretly tied the knot.

In his 2020 memoir, A Very Punchable Face, Jost revealed that although his love story with Johansson began in 2017, his first impression of his now-wife came years prior on the set of SNL in 2006.
“She has just turned 20 and I was 23, but in terms of status and maturing she was here [holds hand above head] and I was here [holds hand one inch off ground],” he wrote. “She claims that she remembers thinking I was ‘cute,’ but I know what I looked like and that’s not the word I would have used. (‘Shaggy’ would have been generous. ‘Slovenly,’ more accurate).”
Jost described Johansson as “beautiful, smart, sweet and intimidatingly sophisticated.”
