The company announced the purchase nearly two years after reopening the theater under a lease-to-purchase agreement. According to the announcement, the deal will allow Scene One to make upgrades to the property, including parking lot work, new seats and more restoration inside the lobby and auditoriums.
“Two years ago, when I announced I was reopening the Spectrum, the ultimate goal was to bring this theater fully under our ownership and today, I could not be more excited to say that this dream has come true,” said Joe Masher, owner and CEO of Scene One Entertainment.
The theater first opened in 1941 as the Delaware Theatre by Warner Brothers and was designed by Blatner & van der Bogert. Scene One said it later became The Spectrum in May 1983 after two couples acquired it and split the original 699-seat single-screen auditorium into two spaces that are now theaters 3 and 4.
“The Spectrum is our crown jewel. It is the theater I grew up going to, seeing films that truly captivated every corner of the imagination. In the past two years, we have brought that magic back to the Spectrum and we have so much more planned to come,” said Masher.
Scene One said the improvements will roll out in phases over the next few months and years. The company also said it plans to seek federal and state historic grants to help finance the work.
