Scott Mills says ‘I should probably go’ in his last BBC Radio 2 show

Scott Mills told Radio 2 listeners he should “probably go” just hours before being sacked. The BBC radio legend has been sacked by the BBC after almost three decades with the corporation. It’s since been revealed that the BBC’s decision to sack Scott relates to a 2016 police investigation into “serious sexual offences” against a teenage boy. Mills was questioned by police under caution but the case was dropped because of a lack of evidence. However the Mirror understands the sacking relates to this individual.

On March 24, Scott, 53, presented his last show, The Scott Mills Breakfast Show on Radio 2 on March 24, and during his final words, he hinted that he may be leaving. “I’m getting everything mixed up today,” adding: “I should probably go, I’ll try again tomorrow.”

But while handing over to Vernon Kay, Scott added: “Meatloaf and Cher, today on Radio 2, Jo Whiley, Sara Cox at 4[pm] tea time, Trevor Nelson through the afternoon, Jeremy Vine at 12[pm] and now, Vernon Kay. What a song to finish on.”

Scott went on to comment: “I’m back tomorrow.” He also joked about being “oiled up and hairless” during a chat with Vernon, as they discussed transforming into Meatloaf and Cher.

However, it was Gary Davies who hosted the show and was joined by comedian and former Waterloo Road star, Jason Manford. Davies has since fronted the Breakfast Show on a daily basis.

The Mirror understands that Scott was informed this weekend that his contract with the corporation had been terminated. Director of Music, Lorna Clarke, sent a blistering email to Scott’s colleagues informing them he wouldn’t be returning to work.

In the email, she said: “I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected, and therefore must come as a shock.

“Not least as so many of us have worked with Scott over a great many years, across a broad range of our programmes on R1, 5Live, R2 and TV. I felt it was important to share this news with you at the earliest opportunity.

“Of course, it will also come as a shock to our audience and loyal breakfast show listeners too. I will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when I’m able to. While I appreciate many of you will have questions, I hope you can understand that I am not going to be saying anything further now.”

Meanwhile, the BBC said in a statement: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted to work with the BBC.”

He first joined the corporation at BBC Radio 1, presenting the early breakfast show between 4am and 7am. Last week, following Scott’s final broadcast, one listener said: “What’s happened to BBC Radio 2’s Scott Mills? He wasn’t due to be away, and even said ‘See you tomorrow’ to Vernon yesterday. Now he’s away until at least Easter Monday…”

A second penned: “Gary’s been doing a stellar job sitting in for Scott Mills on the breakfast show this week #SoundsOfThe80s.” “Geez – both Scott Mills and Ken off on the same day without a heads-up. Is there a sale on somewhere? #popmaster,” commented a third.
