Scott Mills’s public setbacks after shock sacking from BBC

Scott Mills was sacked by the BBC last week, and since then, the former BBC Radio 2 host has faced a number of setbacks.

It was announced last Monday that the British presenter, 53, was let go by the corporation, due to a 2016 police investigation into ‘serious sexual offences’ against a teenage boy between 1997 and 2000. The case was dropped seven years ago due to a lack of evidence.

Now, in the wake of the scandal, Scott has faced numerous setbacks. The most recent being the British presenter “stepping back” from his role as an ambassador for MS Society.

Scott Mills was let go from the BBC last week

A statement released by the charity on Tuesday said: “Scott Mills has been a valued MS Society Ambassador for over 10 years. In light of the current news, Scott is stepping back from this role while we review the situation.

“We take concerns of this nature and the trust placed in us as a charity extremely seriously. Our priority is the MS community and ensuring we can continue to support everyone living with and affected by MS.

Scott has been an ambassador for the charity, which supports people affected by the condition, since 2015.

During his time working with MS Society UK, the broadcaster has helped with fundraising events, including its MS walks and worked to raise awareness for the condition.

More setbacks

Fans noticed that episodes of Top of the Pops starring Scott have disappeared. “BBC Four are skipping the 6, 13 and 20 August editions of #TOTP, as they’re the final three presented by Scott Mills…” a fan account penned. 

Another replied: “Skipping Top of the Pops episodes whilst keeping this Comic Relief special on iPlayer is certainly a choice.”

Scott’s Top of the Pops episodes appear to have been removed

A third added: “Have they had to skip weeks of Top of the Pops 1999 because of Scott Mills? A jump from 2 July 1999 to 23 July 1999!”

Meanwhile, the Sun reported that a plaque dedicated to Scott has been removed from the BBC Radio 1 studio, as well as his photos being taken down at Radio 2.

Fleet services 

As well as his plaque at the BBC being removed, a plaque dedicating the Fleet service station bridge to Scott has also been taken down.

The sign was originally installed in 2016 following a light-hearted campaign with his then Radio 1 co-star Chris Stark, but, according to the Sun, a customer noticed it had disappeared on Thursday morning. 

Race across the world 

On Thursday, the BBC announced it had replaced Scott with Tyler West on the upcoming podcast series Race Across the World: The Detour, which first aired on 2 April.

Scott and his husband, Sam Vaughn, won the celebrity version of the show in 2024.

The BBC said in a press release: “Broadcaster, DJ and Celebrity Race Across the World contestant Tyler West will host the new video podcast Race Across the World: The Detour. The podcast will also feature series four winner Alfie Watts, sharing his top travel tips and hacks.

“Race Across the World: The Detour will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sounds immediately after the new series airs. The weekly video podcast will be the TV show’s younger, wilder sibling, charting the ups and downs of the new series.”
