Iconic actor Sir Sean Connery once made a heartfelt admission about his battle with celebrity after the tremendous success he attained while portraying James Bond.
The Scottish legend became the first actor ever to bring Bond to life with his 1962 debut in Dr. No, and from that point forward, he starred in five consecutive Bond films through 1967. He stepped away from his legendary interpretation of 007 in 1967 when George Lazenby took over the character for On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Fan enthusiasm later brought Sean back to the role for one final performance as the British MI5 operative in 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever. Years afterward, in 1987, he would reveal to Barbara Walters during an interview about the stress he experienced regarding his celebrity status and his reasons for leaving the character behind.
He said, “The last one, this experience, this kind of goldfish bowl pressure of being where one was in that time, it’s very difficult to understand my behavior. But, for example, the demand was enormous for publicity and exposure – people [were] coming on the sets and it was very, very difficult.
And the films were difficult! And got more and more difficult for me to make because they were never well planned. They were always being written… It became the tail wagging the dog, and I don’t like that.”
He expanded on how “the attention” he garnered for his depiction of the sophisticated and debonair Bond contributed to the challenges he encountered with remaining in the role. He elaborated, “The only comparison was like, you’d say with the Beatles,” as he pointed out that there were “four of them” to share in the spotlight and handle it collectively, while he faced it alone.
He continued, “But when you’re on your own, it makes you… you know, in places like Japan, the guy’s coming in with the cameras in the toilet. It really became preposterous.”
Sean became the definitive Bond for moviegoers across multiple generations. The actor died on October 31 2020 at his residence in the Bahamas at the age of 90.
Colleagues honored him following his passing, with racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart highlighting his Celtic heritage, noting that Sean had always remained “above all a Scot.”

Jackie told People at the time, “There was nobody more Scottish than Sean and he never changed it. When he was a Russian submarine captain in The Hunt for Red October and all the movies he did, he was still Scottish.
“The Scottish voice was still there, and it was always ‘Sean from Scotland.’ And he was a very, very proud Scot.”
He continued, “Scotland was in his heart, his home. Sean Connery was above all a Scot. But he was a global Scot.”
