While tonight’s ceremony will get most of the attention, dozens of Emmys were already handed out last weekend at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, which celebrate the best in artistic and technical achievement in an eclectic mix of TV genres.
Apple’s Hollywood comedy The Studio led the way with nine total wins in the comedy category during the two-night event, including Bryan Cranston receiving his 11th-career Emmy for his guest appearance on the show. The Studio also took home a host of technical awards. The Penguin dominated the limited series category with eight wins, including awards for makeup, prosthetics, costumes and visual effects. Severance collected six awards in the drama category. All three shows are considered top contenders in their respective major categories tonight.
Saturday Night Live received 11 total Emmys — three for the series itself, seven for its 50th anniversary special, and one for an “immersive experience” that accompanied the special.
Peacock’s The Traitors was the standout among reality shows, with four wins. Alan Cumming was honored as the best reality TV host for the second consecutive year. The Traitors will look to repeat as Outstanding Reality Competition Program when that award is handed out later tonight.
Former President Barack Obama also won his third Emmy for his narration of the Netflix nature documentary Our Oceans. His two previous awards also came from his work on Netflix projects.
