Wamego, Kansas, gives Oz fans the yellow brick road experience
Wamego, Kansas, offers photo ops galore for fans of “Wicked” and “The Wizard of Oz,” with a museum, yellow brick road and Toto statues around town.
“Wicked: For Good” is about to hit movie theaters across the country, and interest in Oz is soaring — maybe even defying gravity.
The town of Wamego, Kansas, celebrates the state’s connection to the beloved children’s book “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” published in 1900, the classic 1939 MGM film “The Wizard of Oz” and spinoffs like the hit Broadway musical and now two-part film with its Oz Museum, a yellow brick road, many murals and Toto statues. For fans of L. Frank Baum’s book series, the classic film starring Judy Garland and “Wicked” alike, the museum and art installations provide an opportunity to enjoy an Ozian atmosphere.
While “Wicked: For Good” still focuses on Elphaba and Glinda, Dorothy Gale from Kansas does make an appearance, connecting the “Wicked” narrative to Dorothy and her companions’ journey across Oz and melting of the Wicked Witch of the West as told in “The Wizard of Oz.”
