Shakira, along with Jennifer Lopez, headlined the Super Bowl Halftime show in Miami in February 2020. The duo brought Latin artists Bad Bunny and J Balvin on stage during their set, and fans at Hard Rock Stadium went wild.
Now, six years later, Bad Bunny, 31, is set to headline the Super Bowl LX halftime show in Santa Clara, California himself. Though the decision has been met with backlash from thousands of critics, the “Hips Don’t Lie” artist, 48, is not one of them.
“It’s about time!” Shakira told Variety in an interview published Tuesday, October 21. “I remember when we did ours that even having part of our set in Spanish was a bold move.”

She continued, “Acceptance of Spanish-language music as part of the mainstream has come so far from when I started. I hope and like to think that all the times my music was met with resistance or puzzlement from the English-speaking world before it was embraced, helped forge the path to where we are now.”
Supposed football fans are pushing back at the NFL and Jay-Z’s decision to sign Bad Bunny (real name Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio) for the February 8, 2026, show. A Change.org petition to replace the Puerto Rican artist with country superstar George Strait has collected more than 55,000 signatures.

“The Super Bowl halftime show should unite our country, honor American culture, and remain family-friendly, not be turned into a political stunt,” the petition states, ignoring the fact that Bad Bunny is an American citizen.
According to Shakira, “It’s the perfect moment for a performance like this.”
“I’m so proud that Bad Bunny, who represents not only Latin culture but also how important Spanish language music has become on a global scale and how universal it has become, is getting to perform on the biggest stage in the world,” she continued. “I can’t wait to watch it.”
