In May 2025, Sheinelle Jones’s husband, Uche Ojeh, died from brain cancer at age 45.
A year after Uche’s passing, the Today show host reflected on the hardest lessons she’s learned about grief.
Sheinelle opened up about how the couple’s children, Kayin, Uche, and Clara, are moving forward after their father’s death.
It’s been a year since Sheinelle Jones’s husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away, and she’s reflecting on her journey since then.
In May 2025, Today fans were stunned to learn that Uche had died from brain cancer at age 45. Sheinelle had stepped away from work to care for him, and she privately grieved alongside the couple’s children: sons Kayin and Uche and daughter Clara.
Sheinelle has since returned to Today in a full-time role, and she’s opening up about some of the lessons she’s learned since Uche’s passing. Appearing as a guest on the May 22 episode of the All There Is With Anderson Cooper podcast, Sheinelle noted that her biggest concern wasn’t solely how she would face her new normal; it was that she had to help her children grieve their father.
“As a mom, it’s tough because you don’t want to make them sad,” she told host Anderson Cooper in a clip posted on Instagram. “I have three teenagers, you know, so there’s a tap dance as their mom, allowing us all to be vulnerable. There’s a time and a space for us to reflect, and also a time for them to show [that] we can’t move on, [but] we can move forward with that.”
Sheinelle teared up as she articulated that even as her family moves forward from Uche’s death, there will always be a part of her that feels like she’ll hold her kids’ grief.
“I think the biggest pain I carry now, and I am not even to a year … the biggest pain I have is not my own,” she added. It’s not my pain. It’s that I can’t fix it. As a mother, you just want to fix it. Your kids, you don’t want them to hurt, and I think when he passed, the blow that it was and the grief and all of it, like, as a mama bear for me not to be able to fix it, even now, is excruciating. It’s excruciating that I can’t take that pain away.”
After seeing Sheinelle’s comments about her husband, fans rallied around in support.
“I admire this wonderful woman so much ❤️,” one person wrote in the comments. “Love @sheinelle_o and seeing her moments of joy and accomplishment gives me hope for my impending grief. 🙏🏻💕,” another penned. “You are so loved, Sheinelle, and doing the very best you can!!! ❤️💗💜🐢,” a different follower added.
We wish Sheinelle and her family all the best.
