Sigourney Weaver shared some news at last week’s New York Comic Con that should be exciting to fans of the Alien franchise. The actress teased that her iconic character, Ellen Ripley, could be returning to the franchise for the first time since Alien 3. She revealed that there is a script in progress and teased that the story was a “quite extraordinary” idea.
When last the Alien franchise followed the real Ellen Ripley (the Ripley in Alien: Resurrection was a clone and not the actual person), she was on a penal planet after having crash-landed with her companions from Aliens, both of whom were impregnated with xenomorph eggs. The story, which was penned by long-time Alien franchise alum Walter Hill, is the next step in Ripley’s life after the end of Alien 3. “…he wrote 50 pages on where Ripley would be now… [it] seems so true to me.”
Weaver had previously stated that she wouldn’t be reprising the role again. “I was always like, ‘let her rest. Let her recover.’” She admitted that she has met with executives from the Fox division of Disney.
None of this should be taken as evidence that a new movie is being made, but these are promising rumblings that may lead to that kind of news. Weaver is on board with the project, since Walter Hill is an old friend of hers and has been involved with the Alien franchise since its beginnings.
He hasn’t finished the script yet, but the creative gears are in motion to bring the project to fruition. That Weaver has already met with production executives about it is also promising news that once a script is finished, filming might possibly begin.
Do we need another Alien movie with the Ellen Ripley character, especially since Sigourney Weaver is now much older than when she was the star of the first three films in the franchise? If done well, bringing Ripley back and aging her gracefully could bring the entire saga full circle. It could do what Resurrection failed to do: pass the torch on to a new generation of humans to fight the xenomorph.
The movies in the franchise, since Weaver’s last turn as Ripley, have mostly been prequels. A new film could bring the franchise into a future beyond Ripley’s time.
