Zach Cregger’s supernatural horror mystery, Weapons, opened to welcoming reviews in early August. The movie stars Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, Cary Christopher, Toby Huss, Benedict Wong, and Amy Madigan.
Becoming one of the year’s best movies in the horror genre, Weapons gets an HBO Max streaming release date just in time for Halloween.
When Does ‘Weapons’ Premiere on HBO Max?
The Warner Bros. New Line Cinema hit will land on HBO Max, ready to stream on Oct. 24.
After the critical and commercial success of Cregger’s previous film, Barbarian, the director began working on the details of Weapons and started a bidding war among several studios. Initial casting began in 2023 before several actors, including Pedro Pascal, dropped out due to scheduling conflicts.
The movie was a hit, having generated $267 million at the box office after its initial $38 million budget. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a favorable 93% score, with Metacritic rewarding it with an 81%.
“Cregger scatters breadcrumbs generously along his darkly wooded, nettled narrative path, but even as we gradually latch on to what Weapons is doing, there’s nothing to prepare us for how wickedly it does it,” said the Observer in their review.
What is ‘Weapons’ About?
Weapons focuses on a third-grade class in the suburban town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania. Justine Gandy (Garner) becomes the subject of scrutiny and anger from parents when none of her kids show up for school, except for one – Alex Lilly.
Overnight, the kids suddenly disappear, with camera footage showing all of them willingly leaving their homes at 2:17 a.m. Despite a deep investiagtion in their disappearances, there’s no evidence of where they could have one or if someone orchestrated the entire thing.
The community is left wondering who or what was behind their disappearances. Is there something darker going on? And why did only one student show up to school that day?
