The hit Paramount+ series,Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which premiered in 2022, is currently in production for its fifth and final season.
In an October 2025 interview with Screen Rant at the 2025 New York Comic Con, Star Trek: SNW stars Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, and Martin Quinn discussed their characters. While speaking to the publication, Gooding and Quinn shared if they’ve taken any creative liberties when playing their respective Star Trek legacy characters, Nyota Uhura, and Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. As Star Trek fans are aware, Uhura and Scotty were originated by Nichelle Nichols and James Doohan, in Star Trek: The Original Series, which aired for three seasons until 1969.
Gooding said they want Star Trek: SNW fans to see Uhura’s “growth and confidence,” as well as the character’s playfulness. Quinn, who is the first Scottish actor to play Scotty, said that he has implemented real Scottish words in scenes. In addition, he also shared that one of the show’s directors encouraged the cast to “riff” as their characters.
Peck, who plays the deadpan and logical half-Vulcan Mr. Spock, said he’s unable to take any creative liberties due to the nature of his character.
“I follow the rules. But yeah, I’m not getting fired like Martin over here,” quipped Peck in the interview.
He then clarified that the Star Trek: SNW cast “love[s] Martin,” who joined the show toward the end of Season 3.
Peck also noted that the lateLeonard Nimoy originated the beloved role in Star Trek: TOS. He then explained he doesn’t try to deviate from “the rules” on how to play Spock.
“I don’t screw around with the rules and I don’t think Spock does either. The rules have been established by someone else, so I got to follow those rules,” said Peck to Screen Rant.

Peck began playing Spock during the second season of Star Trek: Discovery, which premiered in 2019, per IMDb. Both Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: SNW take place before the events of Star Trek: TOS, meaning Peck’s version of Spock is younger and slightly more emotional.
Collider reported that Peck discussed how Star Trek: SNW‘s Spock is different from Nimoy’s version in a June 2025 panel at the Tribeca Film Festival. He explained that the Star Trek: SNW writers enjoy putting Spock in uncomfortable situations, which gives the character a more humorous side.
“I love that they’ve sort of made him ‘the funny Spock,'” said Peck during the panel, as reported by Collider.
