Royal watchers think they’ve spotted a telling sign about the family’s plans.
Balmoral Castle has officially closed to the public, and supporters believe this could be a strong indication that the royal family is preparing for their traditional summer getaway to the Scottish Highlands.
The royal residence‘s official Instagram account made the announcement, “Balmoral Castle, including the grounds, gardens, and exhibitions, is now closed to the public. Thank you to everyone who visited the castle and estate during the 2025 summer season. We hope you enjoyed your visit and left with memories to last a lifetime.”
While a severe storm earlier this month forced Balmoral to close unexpectedly for a brief period, this permanent closure appears to signal something much more significant — the royal family’s anticipated arrival for their beloved ritual.
Balmoral has served as the royal family’s cherished summer retreat since the reign of Queen Victoria, whose husband Prince Albert purchased the Scottish property in 1852.
The late Queen Elizabeth II famously established the pattern of departing for Scotland in late July and remaining there until October, creating decades of treasured family memories.
The tradition brought together multiple generations, with Queen Elizabeth joined by various family members including her grandsons Prince William and Prince Harry, who spent countless childhood summers exploring the Highland estate.
King Charles III, 76, has honored his mother’s legacy by continuing the Balmoral summer tradition since his accession to the throne. Prince William and Kate Middleton typically visit with their three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10 and Prince Louis, 7, along with other members of the extended royal family.
The sprawling 50,000-acre estate holds special significance as one of only two properties the monarch owns privately.
Unlike other royal residences that belong to the Crown Estate, Balmoral, along with Sandringham in Norfolk, England, remains under the King’s personal ownership and management.
This private ownership allows King Charles to directly oversee the estate’s projects, including its gift shop and restaurant that showcase products from locals.
King Charles opened Balmoral to public tours in 2024, a decision that proved popular enough to continue into 2025.
However, with the tourist season now concluded, the castle’s closure signals that the property is once again ready to serve its primary purpose as the royal family’s private Highland sanctuary.
