EXCLUSIVE: Gotham Award nominee Sebiye Behtiyar (Preparation for the Next Life) and Emmy nominee Sonja O’Hara (Snare) are to star in writer-director Zachary Allard’s horror feature debut, The Scorpion.
The Scorpion follows Kit (O’Hara), “a struggling young woman whose dream of launching her own clothing line has stalled. Desperate for money, she accepts a mysterious job at a cutting-edge cosmetics lab that claims to have eliminated animal testing in favor of willing human participants. As Kit becomes increasingly entangled in the lab’s bizarre experiments — involving perfumes, chemicals, and invasive procedures — her life begins to improve, even as disturbing physical and psychological changes begin to surface.” Above is a publicity still of O’Hara in prep for the film.
Behtiyar co-leads as Lizzie, a “winsome new recruit at the experimental cosmetics clinic who forms a deep bond with another test subject as the women endure increasingly disturbing physical and psychological transformations.”
Allard serves as a development executive at Exile Entertainment, the management and production company led by Gary Ungar, rep to Guillermo Del Toro, Jennifer Kent, Mathieu Kassovitz and more. His scripts have previously been optioned by companies Caviar and Endless Media.
The Scorpion is produced by Raechel Zarzynski (Tender), Kathy Sue Holtorf (300 Feet Tall), Garrett Recker, and Greg Elam, with Independent Spirit Award–winning producer Corey Moosa (Margin Call) also executive-producing.
The feature, which is due to shot in LA later this year, is being lensed by Davon Slininger, a longtime camera operator known for his collaborations with David O. Russell and Damien Chazelle.
Behtiyar earned a Gotham Award nomination for Breakthrough Performance in Preparation for the Next Life. O’Hara recently wrapped on body horror film Snare, in which she stars opposite Wicked breakout Marissa Bode and Mission: Impossible actor Greg Tarzan Davis.
Behtiyar is represented by UTA and Authentic; O’Hara by Anonymous Content, Verve, Park Artists, and Fox Rothschild; and Allard by Folio Literary Management.
