Another day, another acquisition of an independent label by a major. This one’s in Denmark: Copenhagen-based One Seven Music, which has built a strong reputation in the dance and electronic-music sector.
Sony Music has acquired 100% of the label, including its publishing division. One Seven’s Janus Barnewitz is becoming MD of Sony Music Denmark as part of the deal, with his co-founder Morten Vilhelm remaining in charge of their label within Sony Music Denmark.
It’s a Groundhog Day moment for Barnewitz, whose past roles include MD of disco:wax (bought by Sony Music Denmark in 2012) and No3 (acquired by it in 2018).
“Janus is one of the most forward‑thinking and culturally intuitive executives in the Danish music landscape,” said Daniel Lieberberg, Sony Music’s president of continental Europe and Africa, to whom Barnewitz will be reporting.
“His ability to identify talent early and set up artists for long term success makes him the ideal leader for Sony Music Denmark. I am excited to see how he will help shape the next chapter of our strategy in the region.”
