Five years is a long time to wait for a Spider-Man movie. That’s about to change with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which marks Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as Peter Parker and his first since 2021’s No Way Home.
The Marvel blockbuster lands in theaters on July 31, but critics have already had their first look after Monday night’s world premiere in Los Angeles. Early reactions have praised the film’s action sequences and Holland’s performance, with several calling it his best Spider-Man movie to date.
Eric Francisco, associate entertainment editor at Esquire, called the film “excellent,” praising its “strong emotional center, blistering action” and describing it as “deeply sincere.”
Entertainment reporter Jonathan Sim similarly hailed it as “the BEST MCU Spider-Man movie by a long shot,” singling out its “phenomenal” cinematography and “dynamic” action sequences.
Wendy Lee Szany was impressed by the “top-tier action” and “tearjerker” moments, while Nexus Point’s Kevin Verma called the movie “exactly the refresher Marvel needed.”
Mike Ryan said Brand New Day was “much more cerebral” than the previous movie, 2021’s No Way Home, adding: “It’s Tom Holland’s best performance as Peter Parker and the best Spider-Man movie since [Sam] Raimi’s Spider-Man 2. Also the costume finally looks incredible.”
Fandango’s Erik Davis said director Destin Daniel Cretton injects “a ferocious energy” into the sequel, calling it “deeper, more thoughtful and more mature” than Tom Holland’s previous Spider-Man trilogy. He also praised the film’s action, describing some of the fight sequences as his favorites of the Holland era, and said MCU newcomer Sadie Sink’s character was “perfect.” Marvel has not yet revealed who Sink, who rose to fame on Netflix’s Stranger Things, will be playing.
Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier described Brand New Day as “a massive movie” that “can feel a little overwhelming,” but added that “it all comes together so beautifully it works.”
Slashfilm critic Jeremy Mathai said it was “the best of the MCU Spidey films by a mile, and Tom Holland’s best effort as Peter Parker.”
