Spotify has introduced new measures in order to differentiate human and AI artists.

The Swedish streaming platform is bringing in the new Verified by Spotify badge, which will only be applicable to genuine artists who have verified their identity.

Spotify said that, along with other recent features like About the Song and expanded song credits, they are “designed to give you more insight and transparency into the music and artists you’re discovering”.

In order to gain a Verified by Spotify badge, artists must have consistent listener activity and engagement over time, good standing with Spotify’s platform policies, and signals of a real artist represented in the profile.

They explained, “We’ll pair these standards with human review and judgment to identify real artists behaving in good-faith, not just filtering out bad actors, giving you a more reliable signal of the authentic artistry behind the music.”

The new feature will begin to be rolled out within the next few weeks, but it will be a lengthy process with Spotify telling users that “not seeing the badge on an artist profile doesn’t mean they won’t receive it in the future”.

They are also in the beta stage of a new ‘Artist Details’ section on profiles, allowing users to get a deeper understanding of the artist behind the songs.

The latest measure by Spotify comes after Deezer revealed it is now seeing almost 75,000 songs, made by AI, being uploaded to the platform on a daily basis, which represents 44 per cent of the number of tracks that have been submitted.

Deezer has been leading from the front against AI by creating a tool that is able to detect whether a song is AI, which is then tagged as an AI creation and demonetised by Deezer.

Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, also called upon other streaming services to follow their lead and license their technology to make sure users are aware that songs are AI-generated, stating, “Since January, we have made our detection technology available for licensing, and we’re looking forward to seeing industry peers of all kinds join us in the fight for fairness in the age of AI.”
