Custom transition editing

Spotify has a new update that could alter how you build your custom playlists. Starting today, August 19, Spotify Premium subscribers get access to a new tool that lets you create customized transitions between songs in your playlists.

The tool allows you to alter how songs transition from one to the next with more natural changeovers and no awkward silence.

When creating a new playlist or editing an existing one, you should see a new Mix option on the toolbar. Selecting Mix gives you the option to pick “Auto,” which would let the Spotify app make transitions for you.

Or you can tap to customize the mix and “create unique transitions that fit your style.” For example, you can select presets like “Fade” or “Rise” to apply different styles. Other adjustable settings include volume, EQ and effects.

As part of the editing process, Spotify will display the waveform for the two songs, showing the beats-per-minute and the keys of the different tracks. This is to help you find the perfect spot to make the transition.

From there, you can save it for future use or share with your friends. Speaking of which, the editor is also available to collaborate on any playlists you make with your buddies.

The Mix option can be toggled on or off so you can listen without custom transitions.

Get the most out of transitions

Spotify’s blog post reminds that the Mix tool works best with genres or songs that are more readily built for transitioning like house and techno music. You can use the tool to make playlists with consistent BPMs that maintains “the vibe” or keeps it a certain past.

You can also make custom art for your playlists with the editor that debuted last October, though your mileage may vary.
