Spotify’s drive to sign direct licensing deal with music publishers continue. The last year has seen it ink agreements with the publishing arms of all three major labels as well as Kobalt. Now BMG has its own direct agreement with the streaming giant. The announcement came with the same boiler-plate details as the other deals: it’s a multi-year US agreement that “ensures songwriters share more directly in the value created by their work”.
For BMG this is part of its own drive to handle its digital business in-house. “We’re pleased to agree on a progressive licensing model that reflects the real-world use of music across digital platforms and are excited to take our partnership to the next level,” said CEO Thomas Coesfeld, who also praised Spotify’s recently-announced measures to deal with AI-generated music and content, saying that they “align with BMG’s philosophy”.
