Spotify has opened its ‘Spotify House’ pop-up in Seoul for a second year, with three days of performances and activations showing off the streaming service’s features. Korea JoongAng Daily has more details on the event, while the Korea Herald interviewed Spotify’s general manager for Asia-Pacific, Gautam Talwar, about wider trends with South Korean music.
“K-pop acts are seeing borderless growth across continents thanks to our collaboration,” he said, before stressing that South Korea’s latest music wave is about much more than just K-Pop. “Indie rock is having a breakout moment on the platform, with major streams in Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia,” said Talwar. “Hip-hop is big right now. They speak to the soul of many listeners — not just in Korea, but across Asia.”
He also said that Spotify is seeing “strong growth in both free and paid users in Korea”. Independent figures published in September suggesting that its monthly active users have grown by 168% in the last year there.
