Spotify's New Track Reactions Let Friends Judge Each Other's Music Taste

Spotify is introducing a new feature called . This will allow collaborators to react to individual songs in shared playlists using emojis. The update designed to make collaborative playlists feel more social, giving friends a new way to celebrate. It could also silently roast — each other’s music choices.

According to Spotify, Track Reactions are rolling out over the coming weeks to Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets. The feature is exclusive to collaborative playlists and allows contributors to respond to tracks with a curated set of emojis. Those would include a heart, laughing face, thumbs-up, headphones, fire emoji, and emotional face. Each reaction appears directly beneath a song, creating a lightweight conversation around the playlist itself.

The update also introduces profile pictures alongside songs, making it easier to identify who added each track. Whether you’re trying to thank a friend for introducing you to your new favorite song or call them out for sneaking a guilty pleasure into the queue. Spotify is hoping the new feature will make playlist sharing feel more personal.

By default, enables collaborative playlists with fewer than ten editors, although playlist owners can turn the feature off in the settings. Only collaborators are able to view and leave reactions, keeping the experience limited to those actively contributing to the playlist.

While the emoji selection is relatively tame, the feature reflects Spotify‘s continued push toward making music listening a shared experience rather than a solitary one. Over the past several years, the streaming giant has increasingly focused on social listening through products like Blend, Jam, Group Sessions, and its annual Wrapped campaign. All these are designed to transform music consumption into something users can experience together.

Collaborative playlists themselves have become one of Spotify’s most popular features. Friends use them to plan road trips, curate party soundtracks, share new discoveries, and even build playlists for weddings and festivals. By adding , Spotify is effectively turning those playlists into miniature group chats where songs become conversation starters.

The feature also comes as competition among streaming services continues to intensify. Platforms like Apple Music and YouTube Music have steadily expanded their own social offerings. While TikTok continues to influence how users discover and share music. Spotify’s latest update reinforces the company’s belief that community and discovery remain central to the future of streaming.

TechRadar jokingly noted that the update gives users “yet more ways to judge your friends’ music taste,” and they’re not entirely wrong. Whether it’s a fire emoji for the perfect addition or a laughing face aimed at an unexpected throwback, Track Reactions add another layer of personality to the playlist experience.

Spotify says the feature will be limited to collaborative playlists, though it could signal broader social tools to come. One thing is certain: the battle over who controls the aux cord just got a little more entertaining.
