Des Moines knows how to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and after a marathon over the weekend, festivities are being capped off with the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The city of Des Moines has issued several street closures during these events on Tuesday, March 17. Here’s what you need to know.
When is the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Central Iowa’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Des Moines?
The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick of Central Iowa will host its annual parade again on St. Patrick’s Day.
What is the St. Patrick’s Day parade route in Des Moines?
Since 2024, the parade has moved to Grand Avenue.
This year, it starts at Grand Avenue and Robert D. Ray Drive in the East Village. It will continue down Grand Avenue and end less than a mile later at Eighth Street.
What streets in Des Moines will be closed for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade?
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, the following roads will be closed:
- Grand Avenue from East Fourth Street to Eighth Street
- Robert D Ray Drive from East Grand Avenue to East Locust Street
- Locust Street from Robert D Ray Drive to Second Avenue-Westbound North Lane
- Second Avenue from Locust Street to Grand Avenue
- Third Street from Watson Powell Way to Grand Avenue
- Sixth Avenue from Locust Street to Grand Avenue
- Seventh Street from High Street to Grand Avenue
Also, on Tuesday, Court Avenue from Third Street to Fourth Street will be closed from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. for the St. Patrick’s Day block party.
Where can you park for the St. Patrick’s Day parade
With many streets closed and street parking filling up quickly, the city’s parking garages might be your best bet.
These ramps charge $1 per hour and are accessible north of the parade route:
- Fifth and Keo Parking Garage, Fifth Avenue and Keosauqua Way
- Seventh and Center Parking Garage, Seventh Street and Center Street
These ramps charge $1 per hour and are accessible south of the parade route:
- 1200 Mulberry Parking Garage: 13th Street and Mulberry Street
- East Fourth and Des Moines Parking Garage: East Fourth Street and Des Moines Street
- Fifth and Walnut Parking Garage: Fifth Street and Walnut Street
