Stephen Colbert is in demand these days following news of his Late Show cancellation.
The Emmy-winning funnyman, 61, made a virtual appearance during Saturday’s Star Trek universe panel at New York Comic Con to announce that he’s voicing a role in the franchise’s upcoming show, Deadline reports.
“Folks, I’m sorry I couldn’t be with you in person today. But I’m a perfectionist, and I just didn’t have enough bunting for my Mugato cosplay,” he joked in the video played for fans, per Deadline. “However, nothing could stop me from sharing this exciting news: I’m honored to announce that my beautiful voice will be joining Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as the Digital Dean of Students.
Colbert continued, “I’m thrilled to join this universe that I’ve loved for so long, and unlike my on-camera castmates, I’m thrilled to join it without having to spend four hours in hair and makeup everyday. I’ll see you when Starfleet Academy premieres. Until then, enjoy the Con. Live long… and do your thing.”
The show also revealed its new trailer and Paramount+ premiere date during Saturday’s panel, Deadline noted. The first two episodes premiere Jan. 15, 2026, on the streamer, which is owned by CBS — the same company behind Colbert’s Late Show, which is coming to an end next year.
When the late-night program won a Primetime Emmy Award during last month’s ceremony, the audience went nuts — a clear indicator that the sudden cancellation of Colbert’s show was shrouded in controversy.
In his acceptance speech, Colbert said, “Sometimes you only truly know how much you love something when you get a sense that you might be losing it. Ten years later, in September of 2025, my friends, I have never loved my country more desperately. God bless America. Stay strong, be brave, and if the elevator tries to bring you down, go crazy and punch a higher floor!”
