Netflix struck gold with “Stranger Things,” but while the season is new, the plot may have some familiar ties to a story produced by an author with South Carolina ties. (For those who haven’t had a chance to watch the new season, I promise, no spoilers.)
Season 5 of the show first pops up with the cover of “A Wrinkle in Time,” a long-beloved science fiction novel, and as the season has unfolded, ties to the plot of the show and the book can be seen throughout. The novel has been around for decades and has been adapted into plays, a graphic novel and its own film, but the author had humble beginnings in Charleston.
Who is Madeleine L’Engle? Is she from South Carolina?
Madeleine L’Engle, the author of the 1962 book, was a graduate of Ashley Hall, a Charleston all-girls private school. Though not a native of the South, she remembered her time at the South Carolina school (1933-37). In 1982, she returned to speak to graduates of the school and how her time there shaped her.
“I don’t want to lose any part of who I was at Ashley Hall. It’s an essential part of who I am now. I don’t want ever to forget sitting high up in the limbs of a live oak tree and reading Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina,” she said.
How is A Wrinkle in Time portrayed in ‘Stranger Things’?
As promised, no spoilers are coming.
The book does make an appearance in the show, physically in book form, in titles of episodes and with small twists on character names.
See if you can catch all the references on the Netflix show.
