In one small Indiana town, many events would happen that would change many people’s lives, nearly 10 years of a beloved, wildly acclaimed series that shook the entire world.
Stranger Things is now embarking on the commencement of its lengthy fifth and final season, with its opening week registering the highest level of views for any English-speaking series within the Netflix Global Top 10, with a views count of 59.6 million. The objective would be to take this last venture down memory lane as we examine its effect within America.
Although the events take place in the quiet town of Hawkins, Indiana, the series contributed positively to economic activity across every state in the US. Since Season 1 began in 2015, the production industry has created over 8,000 jobs and contributed more than $1.4 billion to GDP in the US.
Over five years and 42 episodes, Netflix collaborated with more than 3,800 vendors, most of whom operate in almost every state, providing services for our production. In fact, some of the businesses we collaborated with became fan destinations from the show’s launch in 2016, such as Bradley’s Olde Tavern in Jackson, Georgia, which served as the Hawk Theater in downtown Hawkins.
Other places in Georgia that appear on-screen as filming locations include the Tucker Recreation Center (Hawkins Elementary School), Madison Hospital (Hawkins Hospital), Emory at Briarcliff (Hawkins Lab), Dominick’s (Enzo’s), as well as Stone Mountain Park (Castle Byers), along with others such as Creel House, Tara Movie Theater, Moondogs City Bar.
Although Stranger Things contributed positively towards the economy in every state, Georgia was most significantly affected, as Stranger Things was mainly shot there, thus injecting over $650 million into Georgia’s GDP. Georgia was also home to more than 2,000 vendors who contributed to the show. Although California contributed positively as ‘Lenora Hills’ (Eleven’s second home), its GDP was boosted by more than $500 million.
During the filming of the fifth, final season, Stranger Things powered its sets with cleaner energy, and season 5 reduced diesel fuel consumption in generators by 43%. Stranger Things constructed a renewable energy microgrid at their base camp, powered by solar energy, a setup other productions, such as Ransom Canyon, have implemented as well.
“The reaction to the first four episodes of Season 5, which debuted on November 26, is as strong as can be. It launched at #1 on the Netflix Global Top 10, entered the Top 10 in every one of the 93 tracked, and was #1 in 90 of them. Viewers helped previous seasons return to the Top 10 for the week of November 24, with Stranger Things the only English-language series with five seasons in the Top 10. Seasons 1 through 4 collectively have over 1.2 billion views across the globe since 2016.” Stranger Things Season 5, Volume 1 is now playing, only on Netflix.
