A coffee shop crew on the North Shore had something to be extra grateful for this Thanksgiving after a famous actor with ties to Massachusetts stopped by.
Joe Keery, a musician and actor known for portraying Steve Harrington in the hit Netflix series “Stranger Things,” popped into Olive’s Coffee & Bakehouse in Newburyport over the holiday weekend.
Opened in 2020, Olive’s Coffee & Bakehouse is an acclaimed shop that sells baked goods made in house and locally sourced items from neighboring establishments. A Newburyport native himself, Keery’s family has been visiting the coffee shop over the past five years, owner Debra Ball told MassLive.
“My staff have always been huge fans and Sunday I decided to give them a gift by asking if I could get a picture of them with him,” she said in a statement. “He was happy to do it.”
The coffee shop shared a photo of the selfie on Instagram Monday with the caption, “We ended our busy Thanksgiving weekend with a visit from @djotime. He was kind enough to take a selfie with my @strangerthingstv fans/staff.”
Keery, 33, started his acting career at Theater in the Open, according to a 2019 article from Boston.com. The annual summer performing arts program is held at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport. He attended River Valley Charter School for elementary and middle school and graduated from Newburyport High School, the actor’s IMDb biography states.
Keery went on to study at The Theatre School at DePaul University. After graduating in 2014, he auditioned for hundreds of parts before landing his breakout role on “Stranger Things” in late 2015. Keery has appeared on the show since 2016, including in its highly anticipated fifth season that premiered on Wednesday, Nov. 26. Keery has also starred in the 2021 comedy film “Free Guy” and in the fifth season of the crime comedy-drama series “Fargo” from 2023 to 2024.
Outside of acting, Keery is also a musician and performs under the stage name Djo. He released the albums “Twenty Twenty” in 2019 and “Decide” in 2022. The latter spawned the sleeper hit “End of Beginning,” which went viral on TikTok in 2024 and peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. “The Crux,” his third studio album, arrived this past April and was followed by its deluxe version in September.
