Stranger Thingsstar Gaten Matarazzo is getting candid about living with his castmate, Finn Wolfhard, while filming the final and fifth season of the beloved Netflix series.
While recording the November 19 episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson‘s podcast, Dinner’s on Me, Matarazzo, who plays Dustin Henderson, said that he and Wolfhard lived together “for a year, this past season” in Atlanta, Georgia, where Stranger Things was filmed. Matarazzo said he enjoyed being housemates with Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler.
“It was really, really fun. It was great. It was kinda like a little bit of like a college experience or at least similar to it,” said Matarazzo while recording the podcast episode.
He said, however, that he and Wolfhard neglected to keep their space clean.
“I would look around like three months after we lived together and like, this place is disgusting. What are we doing?” recalled the 23-year-old actor.
When Ferguson inquired “who was messier,” Matarazzo responded that he and Wolfhard “kind of matched each other a little bit.”
“We got along so well and it been so close for so long that we didn’t really like hold each other to, like, a standard,” explained Matarazzo on the podcast episode. “And so we were kinda just like, ‘Ah, f–k it. Whatever man. We’ll get to it later.’ And then the wake up call came when like we would plan to go out and someone would be like, ‘All right, we’ll just meet you at yours.’ And both of us would be like, ‘No, do not come 10 feet to our home.'”
When Ferguson asked for more details about their living situation, Matarazzo said that their “clothes would clutter” and “dishes would pile up.”
“It got grosser and grosser. It sure did. The dishes were tough,” said Matarazzo with a laugh.
He also clarified that he and Wolfhard eventually “got better” about cleaning.
Gaten Matarazzo Discussed the Last Day on the ‘Stranger Things’ Set
In the Dinner’s on Me podcast interview, Matarazzo shared that he and his castmates’ parents were able to come onto the Stranger Things set on the final day of shooting.
“They did let our parents come because they were there from the beginning. They were all there and they all got close with each other and anytime we’d stay cut and go over, there was always like a section for the parent,” said Matarazzo, who began starring on Stranger Things during its first season when he was 12 years old.
In addition, the actor said the final day on set was “weird,” but “fun.”
“It was like a graduation,” said Matarazzo during the interview.
Several ‘Stranger Things’ Stars Opened up About the Show’s Final Episode
In a November 2025 interview with Collider, Matarazzo, Wolfhard, Sadie Sink, and Caleb McLaughlin discussed the final episode of Stranger Things. Sink, who joined the cast during its second season, said that she “wasn’t expecting to get that worked up” when she first read the last episode’s script.
Wolfhard agreed with Sink and said that he “was pretty convinced that [he] wasn’t going to get emotional,” until he saw “one line.” He said he began “choking up a bit,” causing Matarazzo to grab his shoulder.
“He was tearing up and then I looked around the room then it was like dominoes except Caleb was like still trying to keep composed,” recalled Wolfhard.
He clarified that McLaughlin, who plays Lucas Sinclair, got emotional while they “were actually shooting” the episode.
