Contemporary R&B isn’t Summer Walker’s cup of tea. Despite her thriving in this era, the 29-year-old considers herself to be a bigger fan of “old school.”
She made this confession to Complex on Sunday (Sept. 7) at the 2025 MTV VMAs while being asked about her thoughts on the current state of R&B.
“I don’t like it,” she said. “Well, it’s no shade–I’m just an old school girl.”
Admittedly, Walker still has several classics in heavy rotation. “So, I really love just like all the SWVs, and the XSCAPE and the Brandy,” she explained before teasing another potentially controversial name. The jury is still out on who she may have been referring to, but she added, “I just love old school R&B.”
The Over It songstress also discussed her being a top-tier songwriter when it comes to love songs and even shared the recipe for “the perfect love song.”
She quipped, “[You’ll need] a triflin’ n***a, a smart pen, and a studio.”
Her new album, Finally Over It, is set to drop later this year and marks the conclusion in her hit musical trilogy. The self-proclaimed “retired lover girl” may have taken her album title literally considering she also debuted a new man at the VMAs.
“F**k My Type,” she captioned a series of photos with her and this older, white mystery man. Fans praised the singer for leveling up romantically. “Never seen her look this happy in a picture with a guy so I’m definitely here for it,” one user commented.
Another replied, “You Finally made it over to the soft side of life!!” Someone else chimed in, “Trust me the one who isn’t your type will change your damn life everytime. Stop chasing these jokers and lock in with who wanna see you win.”
Walker previously dated London on da Track, whom fathered her daughter and rapper LVRD Pharaoh, whom fathered her twin sons.
