SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) — Summerville Town Council has voted to delay a decision on the proposed downtown entertainment district, pushing the discussion to next month.
The proposal, which would turn the downtown business area into an open container, entertainment-focused strip, was a key agenda item during tonight’s Town Council meeting. The council members ultimately agreed to hold off and revisit the issue at a later date.
Mayor Russ Touchberry said the timeline for a final decision remains uncertain as leaders continue to consider community feedback.
“It really depends on what the council wants to do with it,” Touchberry said. “This could go on for many months or it could be a quicker final vote.”

The delay comes as council members raised concerns about the proposed district map, including whether some areas without sidewalks would be safe and accessible for pedestrians. Leaders said those issues, along with broader community feedback, need to be addressed before a decision is made/
Some downtown businesses continue to support the idea, saying increased foot traffic from similar event-style atmospheres has been beneficial.
“There’s more people out and about,” said Yvonne Ouellette, owner of Yo’s Crafty Place. “All the businesses stay open until eight, so there’s a lot of activity within the town.”
Council is now expected to take the proposal back up at its next meeting.
