Empire Wild, featuring Ken Kobota and Mitchell Lyon, will perform a free concert on Nov. 9 at Broad Street Presbyterian Church as part of Sunday at Central's 2025-26 season.

To the uninitiated, the cello might be seen as the awkward, uncool cousin of the violin. But in reality, it’s a uniquely versatile instrument that’s been used across multiple genres.

In addition to its starring role in compositions by the “three B’s – Bach, Beethoven, Brahms – and many other composers, the cello has been used by pop artists from The Beatles to Panic! at the Disco.

It’s also the instrument of choice for Empire Wild, two cellists who blend pop, folk and jazz into their works. Featuring Juilliard-trained Mitchell Lyon and Ken Kobota, the duo will perform at 3 p.m. Nov. 9 at Broad Street Presbyterian Church, 760 E. Broad St.

The concert is part of Sunday at Central’s “Where Are They Now?” series spotlighting emerging musicians with ties to Columbus. Kubota grew up in Columbus and took part in Chamber Music Connections, a local chamber music workshop for middle and high school students.
