Sweet Corn festival brings good food and entertainment to the area

The 78th Millersport Lions Club Sweet Corn Festival is Aug. 27-30, at Millersport Lions Park, located at 2905 Chautauqua Boulevard.

Aug. 28 is ABC 6/FOX 28 Day with a special pricing of $22 for the midway rides. Activities include the antique farm tractor tug pull, corn cob toss contest and corn eating contest. The main event on the Brookover-Harlow Pavilion stage will be the selection of the 2025 Sweet Corn Festival Queen and Court beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Aug. 29 activities include the antique farm tractor tug pull, corn cob toss contest and corn eating contest. At 6 p.m. Slaw Dog Christian Rock will entertain on the Founders’ Commons Stage. At 7 p.m. The Cali Morris Band, country and pop music and two-time American Idol Golden Ticket winner, will perform on the Hickory Grove Bandstand. Exile will perform on the Brookover-Harlow Pavilion stage at 8:30 p.m.

On Aug. 30 the 35th Ken Keener Classic 5K Run will begin at the festival grounds at 9 a.m. Along the race route runners will pass along the historic Ohio & Erie Canal, Weldon’s Ice Cream Factory, The Summerland Beach Hotel, along Southbank Road, Brooks Park and back to the Historic Lions Park. Beginning at 11 a.m. the festival will continue with tractorpulls, karate demonstrations, hula hoop and corn eating contests, and lots of entertainment and great food. At 6 p.m. Millersport’s own Trey Johnston will perform country and rock music at the Hickory Grove Bandstand. At 8 p.m. the 2025 Sweet Corn Festival Queen and Court will be introduced at the Brookover-Harlow Pavilion. At 8:30 p.m. The Oak Ridge Boys American Made Farewell Tour celebrating 50+ years of touring will be held on the Brookover-Harlow Pavilion. At 11 p.m. the festival closes with the drawing for the $10,000 grand prize as well as many other prizes.

Walnut Township Board of Education

The Walnut Township Local School District Board of Education met Aug, 11 in the elementary library.

Elementary principal Kim Mathews and junior/senior high principal Brad Lanier reported on beginning of the year activities in their buildings. Superintendent Kim Radulovich reported on the projects being completed in the buildings this summer.

The following are some the superintendent’s recommendations there were approved:

● 2025-2026 Free and Reduced Price School Lunch/Breakfast Program with elementary principal as the approval and verification official and Carol King as hearing official.

● Dave Everitt as delegate and Debbi Popo as alternate to the OSBA annual Business Meeting/Capital Conference Nov. 16-18.

● Amended 2025-2026 junior/senior course description book

● School sports/Events Portrait Photography contract with Mindy Wiseman, photographer, Guild Photography/MG Sports Photography

● For graduation, Luca Carrol Kenney

● Mandated policies and rescinded policy student absences and excuses regulations

● Resolution for META Solutions Cooperative Advertising and receiving bids for school bus chassis and bodies. This does not obligate the district to purchase bus or van.

● Donations from Athletic Boosters, Music Boosters and anonymous donation toward purchase of Turf Tank One with paint OHSAA Athletic Enrichment Fund $1,250.

● Employ Jean Herendeen Ackerman as junior high teacher, Sam Singleton as custodian, and Payton Dearth as administrative athletic director.

● $1,200 stipend for Ryan Embrey as an AHERA plan periodic inspector

● Supplemental contracts for Erica Winegardner and Chancey Jonas for junior high student council, Greg Hines as freshman class adviser, John Phipps as senior class adviser, Kevin Keener as head track coach, Chase Nelson as wrestling coach, Jennifer Blevins as sophomore class adviser and Deanna Blaine as substitute.
