Sydney Sweeney has faced mounting criticism after declining to address the controversy surrounding her American Eagle advertising campaign.
The 28-year-old Euphoria star came under fire following her appearance in the brand’s denim advertisement featuring the slogan, “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
In the promotional video, Sydney remarked, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”
Numerous social media users condemned the advertisement as “tone deaf” and drew comparisons to “Nazi propaganda.”
When questioned about the controversy during a recent interview, Sydney offered a brief response, stating, “When I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”
Actor Dan Stevens, known for portraying The Beast in Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, has now criticized Sydney’s handling of the situation. He shared a post on his Instagram story, which read, “Sydney Sweeney’s GQ interview is a reminder that ‘not having a stance’ on white supremacy is 100% having a stance on white supremacy.”
An image of his Instagram post circulated on Reddit, where users applauded him for taking a stand. “F— yeah, Dan Stevens. More of this, please. White supremacists should not be tolerated anywhere,” one commenter declared.
Another responded, “Love him. Love this. More pls,” while a third person wrote, “Well done Dan Stevens.”

Another critic of Sydney noted this marks one of the rare occasions a fellow performer has publicly called out the actress by name. “I think this is notable because even though some celebs have called her out indirectly via comments (Aimee Lou Wood, then Christina Ricci commented on another post calling her out with Aimee and SZA also liking it) this is the first instance of another actor reposting something that called her out directly,” they wrote.
During a GQ interview, journalist Katherine Stoeffel questioned Sydney about concerns that “specifically in this political climate, white people shouldn’t joke about genetic superiority.” Her response was brief, “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear.”
Dan isn’t the only Hollywood figure who has criticized the remarks, with numerous industry stars “liking” an Instagram post that challenged Sydney’s answer. Among those who engaged with the post were singer SZA, White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood and actress Christina Ricci.
The Instagram post featured a segment from Sydney’s GQ interview. The individual who posted the clip commented, “She was given the opportunity to push back and she didn’t. Therefore, she’s in on it.
“And this is an interview where she speaks extensively about how she uses her art to be able to pass on difficult ideas that make people think. She’s not naive, she’s not stupid.”
