The pop star released her third studio album, So Close to What, earlier this year and is kicking off her Miss Possessive tour.
Tate McRae returns to the MTV VMAs after being nominated for the Best Pop and Best Choreography awards last year for her “Greedy” music video. She stepped onto the red carpet in a totally transparent white dress, with a matching pair of platform heeled sandals.

The 22-year-old pop star is coming off a big year in her career. Her third studio album, So Close to What, arrived earlier this year, following the success of her viral 2023 single “Greedy” and its follow-up hits “Exes” and “2 Hands.” Known for her sharp choreography and high-energy performances, McRae has drawn comparisons to Britney Spears throughout her career, something she has acknowledged as “an honor.”
This isn’t McRae’s first time making an impression on the VMAs carpet. At last year’s show, she wore a black lace Roberto Cavalli minidress that paid homage to Spears’s iconic Dolce & Gabbana ensemble from the 2001 VMAs.
“For sure, the VMAs look was an homage to Britney, a million percent,” McRae told Harper’s Bazaar in a February 2025 interview. “I just thought she looked so stunning in that dress.”
McRae first attended the VMAs in 2020 as a Best New Artist nominee and performer. “I can’t wait to perform,” McRae told E! ahead of the show. “This will be my first time combining my dancing and singing in a performance and my first ever TV debut for singing—it feels surreal to be doing that on MTV.”
McRae is currently kicking off her Miss Possessive tour, less than a year after wrapping her Think Later world tour.
She has spoken about wanting this new era to lean further into fashion and dance. “I definitely do want to try leaning into the fashion a little more for this tour,” the singer told Harper’s Bazaar. “What I’ve been forcing myself to do is write over beats or write over things that the dancer side of me would be triggered to feel, so I can have fun performing it on tour, because those are my favorite[s]. Those are the records that really come to life and my dancers just eat up, and it just feels like a totally different energy,” she added.
