Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl is a sexy, dancy, love-struck mix of all of the pop-star’s past eras—but it is also so clearly a love letter to fiancé Travis Kelce.
In the songs “Elizabeth Taylor,” “Opalite,” “Honey,” “Wood,” and “Eldest Daughter,” she sings about her romance with the NFL star, and makes bold suggestions about their future together, even making references to an engagement and wedding (despite the fact that she wrote these songs before Kelce proposed). But in “Wishlist,” Swift takes things a step further, fully embracing her desire to settle down and start a family with her beau.
Talking about the entertainment industry in which she has spent her whole adult life, Swift sings, “They want to bright lights and Balenci[aga] shades / And a fat ass with a baby face.” She then adds that after all this time, she doesn’t need all that—“I just want you.”
“Have a couple kids, got the whole block looking like you / We tell the world to leave us the fuck alone and they do / Got me dreaming ’bout a driveway with a basketball hoop,” Swift sings.
Swift and Kelce spent plenty of time at home, and in the suburbs of Pennsylvania and Kansas City, Missouri, with their families, during Kelce’s offseason and Swift’s time off after her Eras Tour. During her appearance on the athlete’s New Heights podcast, the singer revealed how this time brought them closer and let them get to know each other on a deeper level.
Swift continues in the track: “I made wishes on all of the stars, God please bring me a best friend who I think is hot.”
“Thought I had it once, twice, but I did not,” she sings, referring to her exes. She then adds of Kelce, “You caught me off my guard / I hope I get what I want, ’cause I know what I want.”
She knew what she wanted, and boy, she got it.
