According to a new study by scientists from the University of Minnesota, there might be several reasons behind the change in Taylor Swift‘s accent from a Southern to a Northern accent. She also adopted “a lower pitch” after moving to the East Coast from Nashville.
The co-author of the study, Matthew Winn, said, “Taylor lowered the pitch of her voice when she moved to New York City.” He continued, “This was the time in her career when she became more well-known for speaking up on issues of social change and feminism, as well as musician’s rights.”
While stating one of the possible reasons behind Swift’s accent and pitch change, Winn explained, “Sometimes people with a lower pitch are perceived as a voice of authority.” The study’s co-author then theorized that the singer “was making use of that tendency to ensure” that people “received” what she was trying to convey.
Meanwhile, Winn also talked about why Swift was the “perfect” subject for this particular study. The co-author noted that the songwriter “is perfect for this type of longitudinal analysis.” It is because she has given so many interviews and done so many recordings “many times over the years.” She also “had motivations for changing her accent at specific times.”
