Taylor Swift’s new “Showgirl” special dominated the box office this weekend.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter’s film, “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl,” brought in a whopping $33 million domestically and $13 million overseas during its three-day showing, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
By contrast, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s “The Smashing Machine,” an A24 drama about MMA fighter Mark Kerr that released in 3,345 theaters on Friday, brought in an estimated $6 million.
Swift’s film is roughly 90 minutes long and features music videos, lyric videos and behind-the-scenes footage, AMC’s website said. It concluded with the showing of a new music video for “The Fate of Ophelia,” a song on her new album “The Life of a Showgirl.”
“It was simply a wonderful gift to her passionate and enthusiastic fans, who got to see, on our giant screens, behind-the-scenes footage and insight into ‘The Life of a Showgirl.’ AMC Theatres is so proud to have collaborated with Taylor,” AMC’s CEO Adam Aron said, according to Variety. “What an honor and privilege and joy it has been for us to once again play a role in her incomparable success.”
Swift had only announced the film two weeks before its release.
“I hereby invite you to a *dazzling* soirée, The Official Release Party of. Showgirl: Oct 3 – Oct 5 only in cinemas!” Swift said in a social media post.
Her newest project follows her 2023 concert film “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” and the corresponding Eras Tour. The tour ran from March 2023 to December 2024 and earned a massive $2.2 billion.
However, it doesn’t look like Swift will be touring for “The Life of a Showgirl,” her 12th studio album, any time soon.
“I’m gonna be really honest with you,” Swift said on BBC Radio 1 on Thursday. “Like, I am so tired when I think about doing it again because I would want to do it really, really well again.”
“I had so much fun on that tour. Obviously, it was the most exhausting challenge ever, physically,” she added.
Earlier this year, Swift bought back master rights to her music, meaning she now has control over her entire catalog. In August, she announced her engagement to Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce.
