Texas Tech’s annual Ignite! event showcases night of music

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Texas Tech University’s annual Ignite event will showcase various music ensembles in a fast-paced concert format Friday evening, Nov. 21.

The event will feature the Goin’ Band from Raiderland, the university symphony orchestra and other ensembles from the School of Music.

Eric Allen, associate director for the Texas Tech School of Music, said the event is designed for all ages.

“The vast excitement of seeing a large ensemble on stage performing and then that performance ends and the next thing, you look up in the balcony and there’s another performance happening,” Allen said. “So, I think they can expect just about anything you can imagine.”

Kylie McAdams, a sophomore, will perform at Ignite! for the second time and she says you won’t want to miss it.

“It’s so much fun and it’s like we’re performing for the community that pours into us so much and it’s just great getting to showcase all of the hard things we’re working on,” McAdams said.

Allen said music has the power to bring people together across generations and hopes community members will attend.

“It’s hard to imagine a society without music; music has been at the center of everything we have done for as long as history records,” Allen said. “The idea that we can bring music of this scope and magnitude to our community and showcase what we do, it’s a pretty special opportunity and a great responsibility.”

The concert is 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21 at the Helen Devitt Jones Theater at the Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences. It is free and open to the public.

Tickets are available for a gala dinner earlier at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Buddy Holly Hall Grand Hall A&B. Money raised from the gala will go back to the School of Music.
