Many people in Michigan make it a holiday tradition to see a movie on the big screen over the Thanksgiving holiday, when a number of new films often debut.
This holiday weekend, theaters across Michigan, including in the Grand Rapids, Lansing and Detroit areas, are screening films from Thanksgiving to Sunday, Nov. 30, according to online showtimes. Offerings this coming weekend include R-rated horror films like “Thanksgiving,” family-friendly picks like “Zootopia 2,” the popular musical film “Wicked: For Good,” and more.
In addition to just-released films, like “Wicked” and new premieres, like “Zootopia,” theaters are bringing back some classic holiday films, including the John Candy and Steve Martin film “Planes, Trains & Automobiles.”

What is ‘Wicked: For Good’?
Part two of the film version of the musical, “Wicked: For Good” stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, set in the fictional land of Oz, according to IMDb. The film follows the events prior to and during the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.”
“Wicked: For Good” has at 70% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 95% Popcornmeter.
What is ‘Rental Family’?
This coming-of-age drama, “Rental Family” follows the experiences of an American actor in Tokyo, played by Brendan Fraser, who works for a Japanese “rental family” agency, covering roles for strangers, reflecting implications for human purpose and relations, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
“Rental Family” has at 88% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 96% Popcornmeter.
What is ‘Zootopia 2’?
“Zootopia 2” is an animated film set in Zootopia, a fictional animal world, following the story of Judy Hopps, a rabbit detective voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, and fox detective Nick Wilde, voiced by Jason Bateman, solving the case of a mysterious reptile in town, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
“Zootopia 2” premieres in theaters on Nov. 26.
