The 1970s was an era of orbital disco nights, bell-bottom flashes, and pop stars who seemed bigger than the universe. It was also the decade that witnessed one of the world’s most famous child performers step out from his brothers’ shadow and straight into music history.

On October 13, 1979, Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, marking his transformation from teen prodigy to full-fledged solo icon. Written by Jackson himself, the track introduced a new kind of Michael — smoother, freer, and entirely in control.

It was his first single with veteran producer Quincy Jones, whom he’d met while filming The Wiz, according to TIME. Together, they bottled lightning. The song’s slick strings, hypnotic rhythm, and Jerry Hey’s horn section created a euphoric disco-funk hybrid that sounded like the future. Jackson’s falsetto punctuated every beat, and his signature ad-libs — the hiccups, gasps, and spontaneous whoops — turned into part of the rhythm itself.

When “Don’t Stop” hit the airwaves, radio worshiped it, often spinning all six minutes without cutting a second. Fans rushed to dance floors. Critics raved. Rolling Stone called it “a masterpiece of buoyant sensuality,” the first glimpse of “the new grown-and-sexy Michael.” Within weeks, it topped both the pop and R&B charts, staying at No. 1 on the latter for six straight weeks.

After years as the frontman of the Jackson 5, the future King of Pop finally proved he could stand on his own. The song earned him his first solo GRAMMY Award in 1980 for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and powered his album Off the Wall to record-breaking heights, making him the first solo artist ever to land four Top 10 singles from one album.

Decades later, the album’s legacy is undeniable: Off the Wall was reissued in 2001 and again in 2016 with deluxe editions and a Spike Lee documentary, ranked among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums, and was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame in 2008.
