Celebrated British actor and comic book cinema’s first super-villain, Terence Stamp, died Aug. 17 at age 87. Stamp’s family has confirmed his passing, but has not shared additional details at press time.

Born in 1938 in the Stepney district of London’s East End, Stamp rose to prominence alongside a new generation of U.K. actors who became international movie stars in the 1960s — names that included Michael Caine, Sean Connery, Oliver Reed and Peter O’Toole. That group directly preceded Hollywood’s own vanguard of rising stars like Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino and Robert De Niro who dominated U.S. movie screens in the 1970s.

More from Gold Derby

Even amidst a crowded field of talent on both sides of the pond, Stamp routinely stood out from the competition courtesy of his piercing gaze and adeptness at portraying fierce iconoclasts and outsiders dedicated to advancing their own personal causes — even those causes were more villainous than virtuous.

While his career experienced ups and downs, Stamp never stopped working in film and television from the ’60s to the 2020s, delivering standout performances in each decade that attracted critical accolades and awards attention. Here’s a look back at the actor’s most memorable roles.

Billy Budd (1962)

Released the same year that Lawrence of Arabia made O’Toole an instant movie star and Oscar nominee, Stamp’s first major movie role netted him a Best Supporting Actor nod at the 35th Academy Awards. Peter Ustinov starred in and directed the adaptation of the Herman Mellville novella, which casts Stamp as the titular sailor who is falsely convicted of leading a mutiny after inadvertently killing a superior officer. While he lost the Oscar to Ed Begley in Sweet Bird of Youth, Stamp did win that year’s Golden Globe for Most Promising Male Newcomer and was nominated for the BAFTA equivalent of that same honor.

The Collector (1965)

John Fowles‘s 1963 novel about a recluse who kidnaps and imprisons the object of his affection remains one of the most chilling tales of obsession and psychosis ever told on the page. And Stamp’s performance is every bit the equal of Anthony Perkins‘s celebrated turn as psycho motel owner, Norman Bates. The jury at that year’s Cannes Film Festival agreed, awarding him the Best Actor statue.

Superman and Superman II (1978 and 1980)

In the nearly 50 years since Richard Donner pioneered the art and science of contemporary comic book blockbusters, every cinematic super-villain — from Jack Nicholson‘s Joker to Josh Brolin‘s Thanos — has kneeled before Stamp’s commanding portrayal of Superman’s greatest foe, General Zod. The key to his power is the ease with which the actor becomes the dark mirror of Christopher Reeve‘s virtuous Man of Steel. Zod is the alien conquerer that Kal-El could have been had he not been raised as Clark Kent… and his absolutely certainty that might makes right is the metaphorical Kryptonite that almost defeats Superman. (Decades later, Stamp went from Superman’s foe to his father with a recurring role as the voice of Jor-El on Smallville.)

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)

After spending much of the ’80s playing variations on Zod, Stamp experienced a complete career makeover when he took a chance on Stephan Elliott‘s indie Australian road trip comedy that joined a wave of era-defining early ’90s LGBTQ+ stories along with Go Fish and The Living End. As Bernadette Bassenger — the older, wiser and most bad-ass passenger aboard the eponymous bus — Stamp lends the rambunctious comedy much-needed gravitas, as well as a much-needed positive portrayal of a transgender character on the big screen. Stamp scored his second Golden Globe nomination for his performance, as well as a second BAFTA nod.

The Limey (1999)

Steven Soderbergh awarded the then-61 year old Stamp a remarkable lion in winter role as the revenge-seeking limey who arrives in Los Angeles to avenge his daughter’s death. (In the absence of de-aging technology, Soderbergh notably used footage from Stamp’s 1967 drama Poor Cow to let the actor play a younger version of his Limey character.) Criminally overlooked by the Oscars, the Independent Spirit Awards did award Stamp with a nomination for Best Male Lead and the actor also won a Satellite Award for Best Actor in a drama.

Star Wars — Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999)

Here’s a pro tip for your next Star Wars trivia night: Stamp was the last person to lead the Galactic Republic before that rascal Palpatine set himself up as emperor. While the actor is only onscreen briefly in The Phantom Menace, his scene is a key moment in the grand thematic arc of George Lucas‘s once-derided, but now embraced prequel trilogy: sometimes the tiniest of cracks — like, say, the taxation of trade routes — are enough to bring down a stable democracy.

Last Night in Soho (2021)

Stamp made his final film appearance as a mysterious stranger in Edgar Wright‘s underrated homage to vintage Italian giallo pictures. (For the record, he’s not the only performer who delivers their final bow in the film; Last Night in Soho also features Diana Rigg‘s farewell performance.) A movie star to the end, Stamp brings the full weight of his regal presence to his handful of scenes.
