In 2011, at the height of the global financial crisis, California artist Alex Schaefer performed an act that sent shockwaves through the institutions. He set up his easel directly in front of several Chase Bank branches in Los Angeles to paint them… engulfed in flames. Titled “The Banks on Fire,” this series of paintings visually captured the public’s anger and the economic instability of the era, turning an ordinary building into an apocalyptic scene on canvas.
The impact was so intense that the police and even counter-terrorism units intervened to interrogate him. Authorities feared that these paintings were not just art, but a coded message or an actual threat of arson. Schaefer had to patiently explain that his brushes were his only tools of protest and that the fire in his paintings was merely a metaphor for the social destruction caused by the excesses of the financial system.
Today, Alex Schaefer’s story is cited as a major example of activist art. His paintings, once seen as dangerous, now sell for tens of thousands of dollars. His actions remind us that art has the immense power to make social tensions visible and force public debate in the most unexpected places.
