It’s New Music Friday! Looking ahead, there’s nothing bad that can be said about music that’s been released this year. Focusing on this week’s edition of New Music Friday, there’s a handful of standout releases from Kanye West, YG, Swae Lee and many more.
New Music Friday Picks
Kanye West – ‘BULLY’ (Album)
Without a doubt, the world of music is better when Kanye is making quality music. Extending this idea, ‘BULLY’ finishes what prime Kanye started but in a modern fashion. Regardless of his personal circumstances, he was able to make an artistically versatile album that isn’t feature-dependent.
YG – “TEACH YOU HOW LUH ME” ft Ty Dolla $ign
Traditionally, you can almost sense that summer is near whenever YG pops back out. Taking a closer look at his new single, you quickly realize that we are being fed another lazy sample re-hash. This suggests that he is thirsty for a Billboard Hot 100 banger and he certainly fails short due to low effort.
Swae Lee – ‘SAME DIFFERENCE’ (Album)
Clearly, Swae Lee is moving to the beat of his own as he finally came around to dropping his debut. All things considered, there’s nothing on ‘SAME DIFFERENCE,’ that justifies the wait. Ultimately, the ship has long sailed for him to seriously be a solo artist.
R&B Corner
The ARTI$t – ‘DND’ (EP)
Once in a while, we are presented with an upcoming R&B star, that checks all the boxes and that happens to be the case for The ARTI$T. Piece by piece, she is restoring the intimacy that is currently missing. Not only that, but there are no features that speak to her ability to carry a project.
Sól – “Talk To Me”
Without a doubt, there’s a lot to be excited about in the underground R&B community thanks to artists like Sól. In essence, if you’re someone who appreciates/prefers a nostalgic sound, her new single was made just for you. In the future, don’t be surprised if she takes another leap based on the trajectory she’s headed towards.
Rapper’s Delight
Key Glock – “Loco”
Constantly, Key Glock is always feeding his fans new music all year long. Reflecting on his newly released single, I was surprisingly left underwhelmed. It’s worth noting that if “Loco” had a more memorable hook, it would stand more of a chance.
Meek Mill – “600 Racks”
At this moment, Meek can usually be disregarded for his rapping abilities due to his usual shenanigans. Every so often he drops an undeniable track like “600 Racks” that subtly remind you what he’s capable of. This indicates that he still has a lot left in the tank, specifically one last good send-off album.
Poiison – ‘La Madrina Vol. 2’ (Album)
Finally, our last spot of New Music Friday goes to Queens rapper, Poiison. At its core, this bilingual album is centered around her elite freestyling ability. It’s important to understand that her artistry is built on this, as she returns to what made her blow in the first place.
