The Conjuring: Last Rites star Ben Hardy recalled an unexpected wardrobe malfunction during his first day on the set of X-Men: Apocalypse. The actor was cast as Angel shortly after leaving EastEnders. He explained that his superhero costume, valued at around $100,000, split open.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Hardy said, “My first day on set, I was in this superhero costume… but mine decided to split right by my a–.” A crew member urgently sewed the suit back together while the team called Hardy to set. He felt torn between avoiding lateness and facing his co-stars in that state.
He admitted to feeling nervous around the film’s high-profile cast, which features Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, and Oscar Isaac. “I was trying to be like: ‘These are just people.’ But undoubtedly, I was starstruck,” Hardy said, adding that the mishap made his first impression even more stressful. Despite the rocky start, the film marked his Hollywood debut and launched him into major projects beyond British television.
Following X-Men, Hardy’s career expanded with diverse roles. He portrayed Queen drummer Roger Taylor in the Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody, starred in Netflix’s Love at First Sight, and appeared in indie drama Unicorns. “I was absolutely overjoyed to get the part because Queen are so huge,” Hardy said of Bohemian Rhapsody, noting that none of the cast anticipated its global success.
Now, Hardy has ventured into the horror genre with The Conjuring: Last Rites. He stars as Tony Spera, the boyfriend of Judy Warren, played by Mia Tomlinson. “For fans of The Conjuring universe, I’d like to think of him as a breath of fresh air,” Hardy explained. Describing the franchise, he said, “These films are truly special… The ‘based on a true story’ aspect within the horror genre is nuts.”
