Police have reportedly launched an investigation into the death of The Cure’s guitarist Perry Bamonte.
Perry’s death at 65 on Christmas Eve (December 2024) sparked an outpouring of mournful posts from the legendary rock musician’s countless fans. The Sun reported on Friday, February 6, that a family member was allegedly “alarmed at something he was told,” and contacted the coroner, who agreed to examine the body.
After that, blood tests were conducted, and the police were contacted on January 23. According to the news outlet, a police spokesperson claimed on Thursday that the death was being treated as “unexplained.”
Perry, who was suffering from bowel cancer before his tragic passing, had an air ambulance attend his home in Devon, England, on Christmas Eve.
“Perry was poorly, but not widely thought to be at death’s door,” an insider informed The Sun. “After he passed, a family member was alarmed about something he had been told.”
The insider continued: “It led to contact with the coroner, undertaker, and police. It is a shocking development and so upsetting for everyone involved.”
Authorities have confirmed the investigation of Perry’s death, which “at this time is being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.”
Additionally, there are no signs of wrongdoing by any family member; however, Perry’s widow, Donna, has dubbed the probe “b–ls–t.”
Donna told the news outlet that Perry’s death was because of “terminal bowel cancer” and “nothing more.”
She explained that, “His doctors can confirm he was first diagnosed in 2020 and had the all-clear in 2021, but there was a recurrence in 2024. I have had no contact with the police since his death. He was cremated last Friday. This is all complete and utter nonsense.”
Lead singer Robert Smith and drummer Lol Tolhurst founded The Cure in 1976, but Perry didn’t join the line-up until 1990, becoming a roadie with the band in 1984.
For over 14 years, he played guitar, six-string bass, and keyboard on albums, including the 1992 album Wish, and the 2000 LP Bloodflowers, until he left in 2005.
Perry returned to The Cure between 2022 and 2024, playing over 90 shows around that time.
